Staying motivated to workout can be the worst. It hurts. You get sweaty, and then you have to shower. It feels awkward when people in the gym watch you, and half the time bros are flexing in the mirror (Like, no one needs to see that). There are so many reasons to not be motivated. It is in these times when I have to remind myself just WHY I workout. Why do I care about a healthy body?
Often, I consider working out a representation of training the faith. When life gets rough, you don’t just give up on God. In the same way, when you don’t want to put in physical effort, you can’t just give up.
So, for Train Your Faith Friday, here are 11 Motivational Bible Verses for when you don’t feel like working out.
1.Sorry to break the news, but you don’t own your body
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”-1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Truly, most of us have times where we just don’t care. I know personally half the time I would rather sit on the couch and eat chips and salsa. However, we are called to take care of our bodies and treat them with respect for the Lord.
2. Place God above physical training
“For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”-1 Timothy 4:8
Maybe you don’t feel like working out for a reason. If you spend far too much time thinking about your appearance or your exercise protocol, perhaps God is trying to tell you to SLOW DOWN. That is okay! Rest in His presence, as His relationship is far more important.
3. He makes you STRONG
“The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.”-Isaiah 58:11
Half the time, I don’t feel like working out. And I’m the trainer! Funny how that works… I am so grateful that Jesus gives strength everyday to pursue a healthy body!
4. We are made for BALANCE
“I have the right to do anything,” you say– but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”–but I will not be mastered by anything.-1 Corinthians 6:12
You have the right to do anything. You can choose not to take care of your body, but it is not beneficial. Or, you can overtrain, but likewise, then fitness will master you. Neither is healthy.
5. Don’t just Talk the Talk
“All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk only leads to poverty.”-Proverbs 14:23
Talking will not get you anywhere, even God clearly says that. This does not mean that you will see results quickly, in fact, you may have to stick it out for awhile. But, you might as well start the hard work, or you will never see anything.
6. Make a Plan!
“Therefore I do not run like someone aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it a slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.”-1 Corinthians 9:26-27
If you really don’t feel like working out, do you have a plan? Perhaps you have zero idea of what to do for your workout, and so, you just are not motivated. Make yourself a workout plan! It’s Biblical 😉
7. Again, Jesus makes you STRONG!
“He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
Well, this is encouragement. If you’re anything like me, you probably are out of breath by the time you reach the top of a tall flight of stairs. Praise the Lord that He makes us strong!
8. Jesus is on a roll giving you strength. Amen and Amen.
“I can do all things through him who gives me strength.”-Philippians 4:13
If I had to workout and care for my body without His strength, I’d quit. He is so gracious to fill us with what we need everyday!
9. Calling ALL the women!
“She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks.”-Proverbs 31:17
Yes, this can relate to just about anything you want it to mean. I don’t deny that. However, here I see this as a calling. Women, the Lord has made us strong for all our tasks! This means that we have what it takes to treat our bodies well, even when it’s hard!
10. Don’t Quit!!!
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”-2 Timothy 4:7
I am preaching to myself here! DO NOT QUIT! Don’t quit when it gets hard. Don’t quit when you aren’t losing the weight. Do not quit after you break your diet! God gives the strength to keep going, even when it’s hard. At the end of the race, it’s always worth it.
11. Taking care of your body is a gift to God
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God– this is your true and proper worship.”-Romans 12:1
This is kind of convicting. He gives us so much and pours out immense grace and love to us. Although, he doesn’t call people to be insane athletes, it is our responsibility to maintain a healthy body!
So, what are you waiting for? You were made for this!
